Scram Kitty and his Buddy on Rails est un jeu de tir sur rail. Vous êtes Buddy, un curieux petit personnage à bord d’une navette. Celle-ci se déplace grâce à des rails placés sur les parois des différentes plates-formes des niveaux. Outre que le déplacement, votre vaisseau peut sauter. Une fonction bien utile pour parcourir l’ensemble des décors proposés, mais aussi pour passer au dessus des obstacles. En parlant des obstacles, il s’agit surtout des rails à sens unique. Une fois dessus votre vaisseau sera automatiquement déplacé à la fin des ces rails. Sauter est donc la seule option pour passer de l’autre côté. Il vous sera parfois demandé d’utiliser le double saut ainsi qu’un saut boosté. Ce dernier permet d’éjecter votre unique moyen de locomotion sur une plus longue distance. Cette manœuvre reste assez difficilement contrôlable. Dans votre parcours, il y a des plates-formes circulaires. Celles-ci intègrent la notion de gravité. Avant de commencer un niveau, le nombre de chat vous sera indiqué. Ainsi, pour progresser dans Scram Kitty and his Buddy on Rails, il vous sera demander d’obtenir un certain nombre de chatons pour passer au niveau suivant.
